Costa Rica Real Estate - Malcolm Miles
Welcome to Pavones Local, a Costa Rica Real Estate company representing homes and land located at “the end of the road,” owned by local Pavones realtor.
My name is Malcolm Miles and I have made this paradise my home for the past 36 years. If you want to learn more about Costa Rica Real Estate in Pavones, and how I came to this idyllic spot in the Southern Zone, I’ll be happy to share with you the whole story when we meet.
In the meantime, let me provide you a bit of Pavones’ history and background, and how I work as a Costa Rica Real Estate realtor in Pavones. As an active and local part of the community here, the reputation I have garnered is one as a trusted source for locating and securing properties in this area.
Arrival in Pavones
When I first arrived in Pavones back in 1976 the only way to get there was to walk; there was no road. At that time approximately five families inhabited the town…and I use the word ‘town’ as a loose geographical term, because the reality was there was little here in terms of services or infrastructure. I immediately fell in love with the lack of development, and truth be told, the remoteness of Pavones. And, of course, the now famous Pavones surf.
The Land of Pavones
Land in Pavones, for the most part, was owned by large farming or ranching families; almost all had arrived from Guanacaste over the last 6 to 8 years. Homes, the few that existed, had been built by extended family members or homesteaders.
These homes were basic shelters with no frills. Most were constructed of lumber rough milled with a chain saw. Roofs were thatch or corrugated tin. We lived for 2 years in a rancho with a thatch roof and dirt floor. It was a bit primitive but comfortable and the surrounding beauty, the sparkling and fish-rich waters of the Pacific made for a laid-back, simple lifestyle. We managed to get by on what we could grow or catch and had little opportunity or desire to create wealth.
An opportunity, however, presented itself in the form of a Tico (Costa Rican) rice farmer who wanted a beach lot near our location. We sold him part of our Pavones’ property and with the cash generated from that sale we purchased more land. Without any real planning I became a trusted source for locating properties for new arrivals who decided they wanted their own piece of paradise in Pavones.
Committment to Community
Throughout the years, both the local Ticos and gringos have come to trust me to help them sell lots or entire farms. Bit by bit I accumulated listings from all over the map and helped both buyers and sellers through the complexities of Costa Rica land sales and purchasing. I found the process to be interesting and fulfilling as well as profitable. My real estate business here in Pavones has allowed me to meet many newcomers who have become friends, neighbors and active members of our growing international community.
Thirty six years living in Pavones has bestowed upon me the most important thing in life: I have raised a family and have both children and grandchildren living on our homestead. Additionally, I have gone through the process of acquiring Costa Rican citizenship and my oldest daughter,Vela, is halfway through law school now!
So, our roots are solid and we continue to grow and flex with the inevitable changes that take place. We are committed to participate in a positive way in the controlled development of our community and to maintaining an ethical and honest approach to Costa Rica Real Estate with Pavones Local. We look forward to being of service.
